Celebrity Personal Assistant - A niche business

OK so I’m plugging an eBook here but i think its worth it. I have just attended a product launch this morning with a few celebrities paid to come along and spice up the morning, although there meant to be 5, only 3 turned up, drank a few coffees, walked around and then went again, all for a huge fee!

But why i was at the event i noticed one young woman who had 4 mobile phones on her lap and was answering them at speed and then writing notes into a little moleskin pad. I thought what a busy person she was and had to find out what her job was! In between frantic calls i managed to introduce myself and proposed the idea to her about maybe getting herself cloned so she could deal with the calls!

It turns out she was actually one of the celebrities assistants and had been a loyal aid to her for five years. After an interesting 10 minute chat it was refreshing to hear about her exciting life as a CPA (as i believe it is known). She works 24/7 but gets holidays off and time around the world using her employers fancy homes. She attends some of the star studded events of the year and meets some interesting people such as Michael Jackson and Bono to name a few.

I was very intrigued and asked her how she got into the business and she said through constantly contacting a hit list of celebs she wanted to work for, she is a black belt in Karate, she also has a business degree from Oxford and is also a trained NLP practitioner. She even told me about industry associations forming around the world specifically for CPA’s as they are not currently recognised by any unions or associations.

So i have returned to the world wide web and found she was absolutely right, this is a huge industry which is unexploited. For instance, the UK Celebrity Assistant Association is ACA, it is strictly for established CPA’s and to even be considered to join, you must have been working for a celebrity for at least 3 years. There are also other various CPA associations around the world such as this one in New York.

With all the overnight people becoming celebrities such as Big Brother and all the Celebrity shows out there, no wonder there is a growing demand for celebrity personal assistants. That’s not all, CPA’s can earn an average of £60,000 per year! And they get to travel all over the world, meet other stars and attend all sorts of celebrity parties and award ceremonies. It is reported that Oprah Winfrey paid her CPA $1 million dollars just to stay after she handed her notice in!

So i have scouted round and found www.CelebWork.com that sells an eBook on ‘How to Become A CPA’.

But my money would be on the person who sets up a recruitment agency that can find and provide these staff, imagine taking say 18% of the first years salary of say £60,000k: £10,800!! Nice! I have looked and can only find one agency that recruits for celebrities and thats a company called VIPA, based in Italy with an office in London, but no contact details.

Would you work for Britney Spears?

To join ACA it is not 3 years of experience you need but only 3 months. Still - question remains - how to get into the field of a CPA? Most recruitment agencies in London very quickly turn down a candidate before even looking at him/her. Even with some years of experience in other fields this doesn’t seem to be enough.
Human Resources simply don’t have enough imagination and personality judgement.
