JK Rowling - If you don’t know who she is, where have you been?

Joanne “Jo” Rowling who writes under the name J. K. Rowling, the writer and author of the Harry Potter fantasy series, which has gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold over 325 million books. The last four Harry Potter books have been consecutively the fastest-selling books in history, a record which the final book currently holds.

She has an estimated fortune at £545 million!!! After a number of jobs JK Rowling got married and had a child, but within a few years she was divorced and was a single mother with not much money. In December 1994, Rowling and her daughter moved to be near her sister in Edinburgh, Scotland. Unemployed and living on state benefits, she completed her first novel. She did her work in numerous cafés (e.g. Nicolson’s Café and Elephant House Café), whenever she could get her daughter to fall asleep.

After completing her manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stoneon an old manual typewriter Rowling tried to get publishers to read and publish her book, after 12 failed attempts a small-time publisher took her and her book on and soon after she got a £8000 grant from the Scottish Arts Council to enable her to continue writing.

Following this, an auction was held in the United States for the rights to publish the novel, and was won by Scholastic Inc, for $105,000. Rowling has said she “nearly died” when she heard the news.  In June 1997, Bloomsbury published Philosopher’s Stone with an initial print-run of one thousand copies, five hundred of which were distributed to libraries. Today, such copies are valued between £16,000 and £25,000.

Rowling never looked back from that point on - after numerous awards, it was turned into films. JK Rowling never wanted the money or fame - but had a great idea that children would love. She gives these 5 tips for success:
